Xeomin, by makers of Radiesse and Belotero, is another muscle relaxant whos units are directly comparable to Botox. So one unit of Xeomin produces the same effect as one unit of Botox, with the same length of duration and onset. Xeomin has no additives, and does not have an accompanying protein like Botox, which may mean that there is less risk of developing antibodies against it (No formal evidence yet.)
Juvéderm Ultra, and Restylane are composed of hyaluronic acid molecules (a naturally occurring substance in the body) that are cross-linked to increase their longevity. They are safe and FDA approved for placement into the nasolabial folds (parenthesis). They can also be used Off-label to fill the under-eye hollow areas (tear troughs), cheeks, lips, and facial lines to give a fuller look and to smooth away unwanted wrinkles. Juvéderm Ultra Plus and Perlane are a bit thicker in their consistency, and are used in deeper areas that require more volume and firmness such as in the cheeks. They also last a little longer. A newer product called Voluma is very similar to Juvéderm Ultra Plus in that it's thick, is made up of hyaluronic acid and is available through the same company (Allergan), but it can last up to two years instead of one. An advantage of hyaluronic acid based products is that they are almost instantly reversible with a reversing agent. Radiesse on the other hand, is a calcium hydroxyapatite product that has the advantage of stimulating the body's natural collagen formation in the injected areas, enhancing its lasting effect. It is thick in consistency, and white in color. Hence it is best used in deeper areas and not as appropriate for very superficial fine lines. Also, it does not have a reversing agent. Belotero is a softer substance with less viscosity and is used more for superficial lines. Sculptra, when injected, promotes stimulation of collagen production after a period of over 6 weeks which results in natural looking results that last over 2 years. It is meant to be injected every 6 weeks for a total of about three times, and is very helpful in those with significant volume loss of the overall face.
Latisse was initially used as a glacauma medication that was applied into the eyes as an eyedrop. Patients who used it noticed the significant impact it had on their lashes and reported this effect to the company. That is how Latisse made it into the cosmetic market. They way that it works is by pushing the hair follicles out of rest phase of their cycle, into the growth phase. Click the picture below to see patients as they go through the process.
